At 2:00pm Bharatanatyam – Gesture, Dance and Telling The Story

Defined gestures can be an effective tool by which we can tell stories. Bharatanatyam is an Indian classical dance that originated in the Hindu temples of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring areas and comprises spectacular foot work teamed with mudrās (hand gestures) and abhinayā (facial expressions) whilst being performed. Explore the narrative aspects of this graceful art form as Gayathri Ganapathy from Equilibrium Dance and arts leads this dynamic session blending gestural storytelling and movement.

At 3:00pm  Our Holbeck – Our Stomping Ground.

Covering the three main areas of Old Holbeck, Holbeck Urban Village, and the liminal, “Ripe for Development”, zone in between, Dr Simon Bradley takes you on a guided walk of our immediate neighbourhood uncovering hidden features of our distant past, our treasured memories and our burgeoning present.

This fascinating 60 minute walk traces the area back to its early origins and is informed by dozens of oral history interviews with people who have lived and worked in Holbeck. We walk through the highs and lows of industrial power, stories of the old Workhouse, cholera, the rise and fall of ‘Holbeck Towers’, and tales of the M621. Throughout the walk our attention is drawn to the sounds that surround us and shape our experience of past and present.

At 4:00pm  How To….Tell The Story Of Where You Live

Delve into your own stories of place with theatremaker Nick Cassenbaum . Explore your relationship with where you live through writing your story. Nick will guide you with exercises and you will have a chance to share it with the rest of the group.

At 5:00pm – Between The Two

We’ll break for dinner at 6pm – Enjoy delicious food from Manjit’s Kitchen and refreshments from the HUB’s £1 bar with free tea and coffee and live music

At 7:00pm – Bubble Schmeisis

'I have put Holbeck in my address for the last two years but today was the first time I discovered the heart of it - I had no idea about the pubs, social clubs, quaint back to back terraces and history that makes up the real Holbeck, south of the canal.  A big thanks to Slung Low for opening my eyes to a place I have claimed to call home.'  - Audience Member
