2017-10-22T00:00:00+01:00
2017-10-23T00:00:00+01:00

Join us at the Holbeck Underground Ballroom for a day packed full of comedy, humour and merriment with affordable ‘£ Pay What You Decide’ workshops and performances.

And because it’s the How To… Festival you’ll learn new skills though out the day; learn how to make the entertainment and the food. No experience necessary !

At 11.00am Cooking With Manjit.

Back by popular demand, Manjit’s Kitchen lead a workshop where she demonstrates how to cook delicious vegetarian Indian dishes and curries, and you can then have a go at creating them yourselves – all ingredients and equipment are provided for you.

From 2:00pm – 4pm Handheld Arts’ Laboratory of Laughter (L.O.L.) (for young audiences)
L.O.L have received reports of significant “funny goings on” and have decided to send a small team to investigate.
This will be a rare opportunity to join the team inside their mobile response laboratory and assist in the collection of data relating to Holbeck as a hotbed of humorous activity.
In a further effort to raise awareness of their work, L.O.L. will be displaying some artefacts of humorous interest from their research archive to members of the public for the very first time.

3pm – 4:15pm Writing for Comedy Workshop led by Rebecca Papworth

Rebecca Papworth is a Creative Producer and Executive with 20 years experience at senior level. A comedy specialist whose credits include ‘Rab C Nesbitt’, ‘Have I got News For You’, ‘I Love the 80’s’, ‘Gavin & Stacey’, ‘Candy Cabs’ and ‘Citizen Khan’. Currently producing BBC1 comedy drama series ‘Home from Home’ starring Johnny Vegas and Emilia Fox, which she developed from scratch.  Bringing a wealth of experience in writing, with an MA with distinction in scriptwriting from Salford University and a stint in commissioning at the BBC, Rebecca has a broad portfolio of experience to share.

This session will explore:

‘Why comedy?’ A brief exploration of what comedy does well above other forms and have you come to the right place!
‘Introduction to character’ What makes for great characters and why are they so important?
‘finding inspiration’ Inspiration can come from everywhere, what inspires you to write and why that matters.
‘Useful resources’ Walk away from here inspired to write and with some of the tools you need to progress your ideas.
‘next steps’? Pick up tips and advice about who where what you should do next.

Starring a medley of characters, overwhelmed by a love of a show-stopping song and performed using only a scarf, this, Ladies and Gentlemen, is an Art Show, made with love by an idiot.

‘A hilariously fragmented hour of physical theatre, song and comedy… her immaculate movements sizzle with the best kind of suppressed energy.’               ★★★★★ Exeunt

'I have put Holbeck in my address for the last two years but today was the first time I discovered the heart of it - I had no idea about the pubs, social clubs, quaint back to back terraces and history that makes up the real Holbeck, south of the canal.  A big thanks to Slung Low for opening my eyes to a place I have claimed to call home.'  - Audience Member
