Scalarama – RESILIENCE – THE BIOLOGY OF STRESS AND THE SCIENCE OF HOPE
However, as experts and practitioners profiled in RESILIENCE are proving, what’s predictable is preventable. These physicians, educators, social workers and communities are daring to talk about the effects of divorce, abuse and neglect. And they’re using cutting edge science to help the next generation break the cycles of adversity and disease.

A message from our friends at Basis Yorkshire:
“Basis Yorkshire in Leeds works with young women who are sexually exploited, women who have an historic experience of sexual exploitation and women who sex work in Leeds, either indoor or on the street. Whether its in our current CSE or Historic CSE project or in our sexwork project, we recognise the impact of childhood neglect and abuse and consequences in later life in many of our service users, particularly the more complex cases. Recognising the importance of this issue to all of our service users, we are so pleased that Slung Low have allowed us to host a screening of the film Resilience, which addresses precisely this issue. Currently touring the UK, the documentary highlights the impact of toxic stress through abuse and neglect which can put them at greater risk of disease, homelessness, prison and early death. While the broader impacts of poverty worsen the risk, no segment of society is immune. The award winning film Resilience chronicles the dawn of a movement that is fighting back – with paediatrics, education and welfare professionals all using cutting edge science and field tested therapies to protect children from the insidious effects of toxic stress caused by childhood abuse and neglect.
Along with the film screening, we will host a short panel Q & A session with some of our staff as well as an expert in the field of child neglect/abuse.
