HOW TO…FESTIVAL at the Holbeck Underground Ballroom

Join us at the Holbeck Underground Ballroom for a summer weekend of free activities and affordable ‘£ Pay What You Decide’ performances for the whole family.

Sunday 27th July  is a day of performance and food from Temple Theatre, Odd Doll and Manjit’s Kitchen. And because it’s the How To… Festival everything you enjoy with us on the Sunday evening you can learn how to do yourself in free creative workshops beforehand on Saturday and Sunday; learn how to make the entertainment and the food. No experience necessary!

On Saturday 26th July at 1pm, Manjit’s Kitchen lead a workshop where she demonstrates how to cook delicious vegetarian Indian dishes and curries, and you can then have a go at creating them yourselves – all ingredients and equipment are provided for you.

At 3.30pm  Ruby Macintosh leads a session on How To…Find Your Voice as she shares her skills in singing and songwriting. No previous experience necessary, just the desire to join in!

On Sunday 27th July, at 1.00pm Temple Theatre offer a whistle-stop tour through their playful and energetic approach to making theatre. Games are central to the company’s approach, as is a generous ensemble. In this two hour workshop you’ll play, improvise and create with a spirit of adventure in a safe and supportive environment. .

At 2.30pm Odd Doll will run a How To…Make Your Own Puppet workshop for kids of all ages. Create your own rod puppet animal and join the parade of The Annual Animal Beauty Contest, performing to your own unique improvised song.

Performances start at 4pm with Odd Doll’s THE WORRIED WALRUS, a puppet show perfect for ages 3+ with live original music and song. It’s time for the Annual Animal Beauty Contest!  This year’s contestants include Terry the Tree Frog, Randy the Panda, Mary-Rose the beautiful flamingo and a brand-new, first time competitor – Wendy the Walrus!  Join Wendy on her magical journey to the bottom of the ocean where she makes some unlikely new friends who help her to re-think what real beauty is.

Enjoy delicious food from Manjit’s Kitchen and refreshments from the HUB’s £1 bar with free tea and coffee in the break between shows (with live music from Ruby Macintosh and her workshop participants!) before Temple Theatre come along at 7pm with NORSESOME. a new show full of comedy, music and physical theatre. “Gods, giants, elves and a very angry snake face off in the show to end all shows – with the end of the world guaranteed.”

Of course, we dont want you to feel that you have to do everything – its absolutely fine to pick and choose!
