MANUELITA – Popelei Theatre
A new theatre production by Popelei Theatre.
Revolutionary, proto-feminist, underground spy and the beating heart of South American liberation, Manuela Saenz died in poverty, all but forgotten by the history books – until now.
Blending storytelling, physical theatre, comedy and live music, Lecoq-trained Tamsin Clarke brings Manuelaʼs story of love, loss and revolution vibrantly to life.
With accompaniment by Colombian musician and guitarist Camilo Menjura (UK Latin American Musician Of The Year 2014), Manuelita promises audiences a heart-swelling, toe-tapping night out at the theatre.
As the audience is serenaded to their seats by guitarist Camilo Menjura, it is clear that Tamsin Clarkeʼs show is going to be something special. This is a hilarious, moving, tragic and heart-warming piece of theatre…one not to be missed.
* * * * * Three Weeks
British-Venezuelan Clarke bursts on to stage all pent-up anger, frustration and passion… a wonderful, warm performance that will have you leaving on a high.
* * * * The Stage
Manuelita is a delight, presented by the energetic and winning Tamsin Clarke…her audience falls in love with both player and subject…
* * * * British Theatre Guide
Manuelita centres a visually striking hyper-reality around a charismatic and multi-faceted female lead, and its playful, pacey and poetic interpretation of history will strike a chord…
* * * * Broadway Baby
…a slick, engaging piece of theatre, which conveys the life of Manuela Saenz with tenderness and charm. For an hour-long masterclass on how to write, star in and direct a one-woman show, Manuelita is your hit.
* * * * Postscript Journal
A real and physical prescence, utterly impossible to ignore…rousing and clear…bursts with warmth and life.
