4th October 2015 @ 10:00 am – 9:00 pm

Join us at the Holbeck Underground Ballroom for a packed day of ‘£ Pay What You Decide’ workshops and performances, with a deliciously fearsome flavour!

And because it’s the How To… Festival you can learn new skills in £paywhatyoudecide creative workshops though out the day; learn how to make the entertainment and the food. No experience necessary!

At 10.00am Cooking With Manjit.

At 12:00 An introduction to Stage Combat.

(additional session at 1:30pm added by demand!)

Led by Fight Director Liam Evans – Ford (Fight Director on Slung Low’s most recent production of Camelot: The Shining City)- This hour long workshop will give you a taste of the world of unarmed stage fighting. Come with the family and learn to slap, punch, kick and grab each other’s hair (It sounds violent – but it is pretend!) and find out how you go about tricking an audience into thinking that you’ve slapped someone! Come and learn the dark art of unarmed combat for the stage.

At 1:00pm How To Frighten People: A Guide To Writing Creepy Stories

Join Christopher Fowler as he guides you through the art of writing creepy stories and answers questions about the genre- Why do some stories get under your skin? How can you write a memorable story? What are the best ghost stories and creepy tales ever written? Are there mistakes you can avoid? How do you write great characters? Which are the best short stories to read? And how can you get tales published? Christopher Fowler is the recipient of the 2015 CWA Dagger In The Library, and the multi award-winning author of over 30 novels and 13 short story collections including ‘Roofworld’, ‘Spanky’, ‘Disturbia’, ‘Paperboy’ and ‘Film Freak’. His latest novel is the JG Ballard-esque thriller ‘The Sand Men’.

At 2:00pm Pumpkin Carving Workshop

Dan McGlade and his Halloween Helpers share the tips and tricks to creating the perfect Halloween pumpkin. Whether you’ve never carved a pumpkin before or you’re a seasoned Halloween veteran, there is something for everyone… Most people know that pumpkins are commonly carved into Jack-o’-Lanterns for Halloween in North America. But throughout Britain and Ireland, there is a much longer tradition of carving lanterns from vegetables, particularly the turnip, mangel-wurzel, or swede.  In fact, carving out and lighting vegetables for Halloween originated from an Irish myth about a man name “Stingy Jack”, the original source of the Jack-o’-Lantern name. Pumpkins and tools provided. You may have to bring your own mangel-wurzel. All creations can be taken home…just in time for Halloween!

At 3:00pm Zombie SFX Make-up

(additional session at 4pm added by demand!)

Get your hands dirty and create your own gruesome scars and wounds in this fun and energetic Special Effects (SFX) Makeup Workshop with theatre artist Douglas Thompson. You will discover the basic techniques – plus a few secrets – from film, theatre and television. You will also learn how to make your own scars and wounds at home using everyday household ingredients and discover the intriguing history of SFX makeup and find out that it’s much more about invention, artistry and illusion than about real violence.

Douglas has been working for 15 years as a theatre artist and is an expert in mask making and makeup techniques. He has been a regular workshop leader for schools and youth services and has performed and exhibited his work in venues across the country.
