This series of interviews by Kara McKechnie focuses on food and social justice, inviting a range of artists, activists, educationalists and policy makers to talk about their work in tackling the crises of our era. The last 12 months in particular have confronted us with shortcomings of our economy and the ones left behind by it. This series aims to contribute to the broader conversation about reform and building back better.

Slung Low operates beyond the market: tickets and College participation are ‘pay what you decide’ (a practice now well established across the arts sector) and Arts Council funded resources are shared with artists and our local community in South Leeds. Defining value in non-financial ways and serving our local community are central to our beliefs and our mission. The ongoing Covid-crisis has re-defined what this means in practice, and the company has run a foodbank and social care referral hub since March 2020.
