WHO ARE WE?

Slung Low is a maker of large scale, outdoor, political theatre often with large groups of citizen performers at its heart and always on fire.

The same team currently runs two spaces in Holbeck, an inner city South Leeds ward – The Warehouse in Holbeck and Slung Low at Temple.
Both venues are made available to other artists and community groups as performance and cultural spaces to anyone who needs them.

We also manage 16 acres of semi-ancient woodland in the Holme Valley where we have just built a new classroom space and we have a double decker bus that is a mobile teaching space.
Wherever we are based, we always strive to say yes to everything we can, we host events from every community that wants to use our spaces.

Wherever we are working and wherever we are based, everything we do is Pay What You Decide. We share everything we have with everyone who has need of it.

And the same team does all these things. We’re a team of theatre artists exploring what it is to operate beyond the market, who believe that culture and art should be a central part of everyone’s lives, who understand that public subsidy means we are in service to our South Leeds community and who are guided by the ambition to be useful and kind at all times. And always on fire.

And we are looking for someone to join the team.

WHO ARE YOU?

You could be a director, actor, designer, producer, writer, technician. Or you might be none of those things. You might come from a military background, project management, social care, events, education or something else entirely.

You might have gone to drama school, or not. University, or not. College, or not.

We are trying to keep the doorway you have to move through to work with us as wide and as broad, and as least like a door, as possible. We believe what we do is important. We know that it is hard. But it is also incredibly rewarding, and we need to find the right person to join the team- and to limit who they might be, where they might come from, and what they might have done in the past is most unwise.

This is a team sport. You will have your own areas of responsibility of course but they will come from what you enjoy, what you can contribute, as well as what we need. Mostly we work as a team, mucking in to achieve the goal. And our world is always changing; a wood, a warehouse, a show, a classroom: we prepare many different spaces, for many different groups of people.

It’s a really exciting period of change and development for us. We have already identified some areas of our work that the new company member will take on, particularly in relation to the operation and administration of the venues and the company’s core activity. You can expect to spend a lot of your time at first supporting the development of the spaces, preparing our venues for audiences and artists and helping make sure they are welcoming.

You will never be asked to do anything that you haven’t been properly trained to do and are not comfortable doing. But you will also be expected to be the sort of person who gets excited about learning new things. 

We learn a lot of new things here at Slung Low and we make sure we have the resources to support that learning. We train you to do these and many other things too: we’re looking for people who are excited about the prospect of doing all that.

We aren’t looking to match a set of duties against a set of experiences. We’re looking for someone to join our team, to be a member of a hard-working gang. We wouldn’t want you to not know that this is hard work; physically, mentally and sometimes emotionally- it isn’t for everyone, but it might be for you.  So write us a letter, send us a video, or a voice memo- whatever you are comfortable with. It is a full-time position for 12 months, it is based in Leeds, evening and weekend work is required. Everyone at Slung Low gets paid the same: £39,000 per year. Additionally there’s private health insurance for the bits that the NHS can’t help with (physio, teeth, feet), a training budget and top quality tea and coffee at all times.
